Upsurge media presents "Hip Hop Unplugged"
25th Bump N' Hustle event sees us performing at our annual party at
Harbourfront center for our 6th year providing a great evening of
free entertainment from some of Toronto's brightest musical lights.
We revisit and revamp our 1998 performance of "The Ghetto Opera"
- a concept show presented as a performance of classic material whose
lyrical content constructs a plot based on ghetto life's trails. Drawing
on the broad cipher of afro-american musical inspiration from Nina
Simone percussive blues to the seminal 70's soul of Donnay Hathaway
and Bobby Womak, Bill Brandon proto-disco, Gil Scott Herron's angst-ridden
jazz, Funkadelic funk-rock, rare groove and jump up disco all flipped
and impeccably bridged by musical director Andrew Craig and the 11
member mob we've assembled to back the outstanding vocal abilities
of Bump N' Hustle chief vocal rockers Divine Earth Essence, Wade O
Brown, Alana Bridgewater, Rayon and the fly spoken word pieces by
Jemeni this one will be essential for the mind, booty and soul.
live show will be sandwiched in the traditional Bump N' Hustle format
by an opening DJ set by the one and only Paul E. Lopes from 8:00pm
- 9:00pm on the Norigen Stage and followed by another set where DJ
Mike Tull also joins in to get the dance floor loose from 11:00pm
- 2:00am in the Lakeside Terrace!
Media will present "Hip Hop Unplugged" in the Brigantine
Room between 11:00pm - 2:00am.
shows will be presented as part of "Fresh Fest - A Festival of
Beats Rhythms and Rhymes" featuring the art of Heavyweight Art
Installation, dance featuring urban tap and breakdancing by Bag O
Trix, the music of New York Ninja Tune afro-funksters Antibalas, Bullfrog,
Mambo Urbano Orchestra, DJ Serious, films featuring Saul Williams
and Citizen Kane, fashion shows, great food, crafts market, discussion
panels, spoken word performances, theatre
and that's the tip
of the iceberg.
