In the spirit of a back-in-the-day, true-school jam, R.E.M.G. and Hot Stepper Productions present DOIN' IT; a series showcasing some of hip-hop's most prolific producer/DJs - those who can also rock a club as well as they rock a beat. The popular series has, thus far, featured Pete Rock, ?uestlove, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and most recently, Motown beat-banger Jay Dee. For the fifth instalment in the series, we present to you the sound behind one of the most influential and innovative groups in hip-hop.
De La Soul is in the unique position of having influenced a generation of hip-hop artists with truly original albums like Three Feet High & Rising and De La Soul Is Dead, and still continuing to resonate with contemporary fans with more recent albums like Stakes Is High, Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump and Art Official Intelligence: Bionix. It is that versatility, that instinctive need to constantly create, that makes De La Soul who they are.

A large part of who they are is attributable to one Vincent Mason, aka Maseo, aka Plug 3. The DJ of the trio, Mase is also an established producer in his own right (Mos Def, Tony Touch, among others). He is currently completing work on the third instalment of the group's "AOI" series as well as a compilation on his own Bear Mountain Records label. The compilation will showcase his diversity as a producer - crossing from hip-hop to R&B to rock. Both projects are due out in March of this year and he will be bringing much of that, along with some of the music that helped shape the most creative sound in hip-hop, to the Roxy for his Canadian DJ debut.
