In the spirit of a back-in-the-day, true-school jam, R.E.M.G. and Hot Stepper Productions present DOIN' IT; a series showcasing some of hip-hop's most prolific producers - those who can also rock a club as well as they rock a beat. The popular series has, thus far, featured legendary beat master Pete Rock, ?uestlove, drummer for Philly's The Roots and most recently Ali Shaheed Muhammad former DJ/Producer for legends A Tribe Called Quest.

Born on the mean streets of Detroit, James Yancey has become one of today's most sought-after and respected hip-hop producers. Better known as Jay Dee or Jay Dilla, he first came to light as one-third of Slum Village (with MCs T3 and Baatin). Not only was Dilla responsible for the group's sound, he also held down double duty as an MC. As word of SV spread so did word of their producer's skills and he soon began to spread his wings doing work for The Pharcyde, Keith Murray and Busta Rhymes. It was soon after that Jay was brought in to contribute his magic on the Tribe Called Quest album "Beats, Rhymes & Life" (1996) and subsequently joined The Ummah - the ghost production team with Q-Tip and Ali (they disbanded in 1999 after the break-up of Tribe).

Since then Jay Dee has gone on to produce for the likes of D'Angelo, Macy Gray and Erykah Badu as well as being recruited to join The Soulquarians, with ?uestlove, James Poyser and the aforementioned D'Angelo. With the release of "Welcome 2 Detroit" (BBE), Dilla secured his place among hip-hop's elite producers. Having formed his own label, McNasty (MCA) his output shows no signs of slowing.
