In the spirit of a back-in-the-day, true-school jam, R.E.M.G. and Hot Stepper Productions present DOIN' IT; a series showcasing some of hip-hop's most prolific producers - those who can also rock a club as well as they rock a beat. March 15, 2002 features ?uestlove on the decks!

To say Ahmir Thompson aka ?uestlove is an instrumental part of the new Philly sound is an understatement. ?uestlove is recognized as the man who lays the beat down for seminal hip-hop crew THE ROOTS and contributed production for D'Angelo, Common, Erykah Badu and Bilal. Demonstrating his natural musical diversity ?uest has also been working with Zack De La Rocha (formerly of Rage Against the Machine), has a jazz CD with Christian McBride, entitled The Philadelphia Experiment and provided the beats with The Roots on Jay-Z's Unplugged CD.

Ahmir has played drums since he was 7. Got his first set and in exchange had to agree to practice 5 hours a day. Instead of hiring a babysitter, his dad Lee Andrews of The Hearts, a doo-wop group which hit top 40 in the late '50s made him an honorary percussionist in his band, so he could keep an eye on him while on stage. By age 12, Ahmir was the musical bandleader of the group, and maintained that role until The Roots were signed to Geffen in 1993. Ahmir is also an accomplished hiphop journalist, and has written several articles for various hiphop magazines, such as RapPages. You can read regular news updates and record reviews written by ?uest at http://www.okayplayer.com/theroots/.

?uest has also been flexing his skills behind the turntables. He'll be featured with his own title, later this year, in the BEAT GENERATION CD series (BBE Records). With a weekly DJ night in Philly and having played around the world, he brings his sound to Toronto for his turntable debut, dropping everything from hip-hop to house to soul. If you were at, or heard about, the first edition of DOIN' IT featuring legendary beat master Pete Rock, then you know where everyone will be on March 15th!!
